Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
