Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
