The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
